Bathed by the clear waters at the heart of the Pacific Ocean, lulled year round by gentle trade winds, le Caillou (i.e. the Pebble)1, has a lot to offer in addition to its heavenly beaches and the bright sun.

  2. Take advantage of one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world and go diving.
  3. Vist the Noumea Market at Port Moselle It sells a wide range of arts and crafts, and fresh produce including flowers, fruit and veggies, bread, cakes, olives, meat and fish
  4. Visit the Botanical and Zoological Gardens, 4km (2.5 miles) from Nouméa, which is home to over 700 species of animals
  5. Venture over to the Ile des Pins, discovered by Captain Cook in 1774, and lying 70km (45 miles) off Grande Terre. This exceedingly beautiful island has many white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, lush rainforests, pines, orchids and ferns not to mention archaeological remains. Day trips are available from Nouméa.

Travel Tips: 

  • The official language is French, but about thirty Melanesian dialects are also spoken throughout the country.
  • A valid passport is required to travel to New Caledonia.
  • No vaccinations are required to travel to New Caledonia. Once there, however, it is strongly recommended to protect yourself against mosquitoes.
  • French, Asian or Oceanic, New Caledonian cuisine reflects its mixed population, offering visitors a delicious, eclectic menu.

Weather/ Climate:

New Caledonia has a tropical climate and the weather is spring-like year round. Average temperatures are between 15°C and 32°C depending on the season.
